Steering wheel shakes at highway speed? That's balance. A weight fell off or the tire settled after install. It's a ten-dollar-a-corner problem that people drive on for a year.
Front tires worn out, rears still look new? That's rotation — or the lack of it. On almost everything on the road the engine sits up front, so the front tires carry the most weight, do all the steering and take most of the braking. They wear out noticeably faster, and on a lot of cars they are finished while the rears still have half their tread. Moving them around every 5,000 to 7,500 miles is how you get one set of tires to wear out evenly instead of buying two at a time, twice as often.
