Steady light. One or more tires are genuinely low. Put air in them. If the light goes out in a few minutes of driving, you are done and it cost you nothing.
Flashes for about a minute at startup, then stays on. That is the system telling you it has a fault — a sensor is dead, missing, or not talking to the car. Air will not fix it. That is the one that costs $60.
TPMS has been required on passenger vehicles in the US since model year 2008, so almost everything on the road now has it. The batteries are sealed inside the sensor and are not replaceable, which is the part people find hardest to believe. They last somewhere around five to ten years and then they are finished. If your car is that age and the light came on and stayed on, that is usually the whole story.

My tire pressure light is on but the tires look fine. What is it?
If the light is steady, check the pressure with a gauge — tires can be several PSI low and still look normal. If the light flashes for about a minute when you start the car and then stays on, that is a system fault, usually a dead sensor battery, and air will not clear it.
Can the battery in a TPMS sensor be replaced?
No. The battery is sealed inside the sensor housing and is not serviceable. When it runs out, roughly five to ten years in, the sensor is replaced.
Do I need new sensors when I buy new wheels?
Not always. Sensors can often be moved over to the new wheels. Bring the vehicle and the wheels and we will tell you before you buy anything — see our wheels page.
